As it was I took advantage of the 20% discount, boosted some Tesco Clubcard vouchers (worth twice their value in Evans vouchers) and traded in an old BMX for another £50 reduction. In the end I ended up spending just £380 hard cash.Initially the bike looks great. It's not the lightest machine out there but seems to be well put together and the frame is really well finished. Paint is deep and lustrous and the frame is actually lacquered over the decals which means they should look good for a good while yet. It felt pretty good when I took it for a quick ride around the car park but the forks were nowhere near set up correctly for rider weight (my son) nor was this mentioned when I picked it up. So, if you're unfamiliar with modern air shocks you'll need to do some research. You might also need to invest in a high pressure shock pump if you haven't already got one to adjust the fork air pressure so that it works optimally for rider weight and riding style. Okay. Initially my son spent a few days riding around the close getting used to gears, suspension and geometry.The first problem we encountered was dropping the seat down. It's useful to be able to do this when riding tricky descents so that you can more easily shift your body weight around the bike. Whilst the seat tube is pretty smooth the seat post is far too long to drop the saddle more than a couple of inches. I sawed off a good 10cm (and carefully filed any burrs) to allow the seat to be dropped well out of the way when descending. I carefully measured the saddle height and minimum seat post insertion requirements before I did this and you should do the same to avoid damaging the frame by a seat post not being inserted enough.Second problem was on the first ride out. We'd barely gone half a mile and just started our first climb in lowest gear when the chain unexpectedly snapped. It simply pulled apart. As it did so the loose chain wrapped around the wheel and pulled the dérailleur into the spokes bending the dérailleur hanger (as it's supposed to do to protect the frame) but also bending the dérailleur cage (ruining it), twisting the chain (ruining it) and pulling the wheel out of true (buckling it). Phoned Evans straight away and to their credit they invited me in immediately and, after a brief inspection, said that they'd re-set the hanger, replace the dérailleur and replace the chain with an SRAM specific rather than the original KMC generic model. I must admit that I've never had a problem with a KMC chain in the past but welcomed the update to SRAM to match the dérailleur etc. Evans sorted all this by the next day which was impressive.However. When I'd collected the bike and taken it home I noticed that the gears were not correctly adjusted. They were pretty close and indexed adequately but a slight back pedal would see the chain catching on the adjacent larger sprocket, pinging the chain off the correct rear sprocket so that when power was applied through the pedals it was effectively in a different cog than the dérailleur was expecting it to be in gear and wanting to change to the correct one. The front changer was also occasionally over shifting and throwing the chain off both the small ring when down changing and the large ring when shifting up. Some small adjustments to the both front and rear dérailleur were needed to remedy these problems which I wouldn't have expected on a recently repaired bike.A third problem occurred after a minor low speed fall on our second ride out. The clamp on the rear brake lever snapped at the hinge point so that it was barely secured to the bar. The brake lever assembly has a two piece design and as such I would have expected the smaller clamp half part or the bolt to break, thus saving the lever, piston, reservoir etc. This was not the case and the entire cast brake lever assembly needed to be replaced and refitted (including a full bleed which requires a special service kit at additional cost).So. On the whole, even though the bike looks great and was a bit of a bargain, I'm a little disappointed in its durability, componentry and the attention to detail following the repairs.
